71. Leibnitz, G. Protogaea sive de prima facie telluris et antiquissimae historiae vestigiis in ipsis naturae monumentis dissertatio. Ex schedis manuscriptis in lucem edita a Christ. Ludovica Scheidio. Goettingae, G. Schmidt, 1749. 4to, 2 ll., XXVI, 1 l., 86p., one engraved titlevignette and 1 engraved textvignette and 12 folding engravings. New h.calf with marbled board and new flyleaves. Dfl. 4.000,= = Text and plates have been cleaned and small library stamp on title. Nissen ZBI, 2428; not in Ward and Carozzi. Rare "first edition" of this great geological classic, which was published by this important mathematician and physiologist, who accepted in his "Protogaea" the Cartesian view, that primitive matter has a fluid consistency owing to the tremendous initial heat and that the earth's spherical form was derived from the aggregation of whirling ultimate elements or "monads" of matter. In place of the Cartesian principle of momentum, Leibnitz starts from a dynamical basis and assumes a force which accomplished the separation of light from darkness or as he also expressed it the separation of the more "active" elements of the universe from the more "passive". See Zittel, Hist. of Geology p. 27/28. The part dealing with mineralogy is much more practical as he became acquainted with the mines of the Harz in Germany and he gives account of the mode of occurences of metals, minerals and fossils in Hannover and Brunswick (see also Zittel). The first description during his lifetime (1646-1716) was published in only 3 pages in the Acta Eruditorum in 1693 without the plates, which we have too at Dfl. 1.250,= and this paper remained in a manuscript until it was posthumously published in 1749 (see above). We also hold a rare complete set of the Acta Eruditorum vols. 1-50 and the Nova Acta vols. 1-10 with some indexes and suppl. (1682-1754) at Dfl. 27.500,=. However the "real" translation into german was only published in 1949 by Von Engelhardt and we need a copy too!

New h.calf with new marbled flyleaves with marbled edges. Dfl. 3.500,= = Horblit, no.70: A classic by the "Father of modern Geology" presenting the doctrine of uniformitarianism, namely that the process of the past must be judged by those of the present... Dfl. 750,= = This is a fine copy of the enlarged second edition esp. in the Addenda on the main remains of a human skeleton found by Boué in the continental ice of Greenland. Lyell's studies of the early existence and origin of man. He gave accounts of the discovery of stone tools and of Neanderthal man: He described Darwin and Wallace's theories of the indefinite modification of species by natural selection and some of Darwin's arguments, and reviewed his own analyses in 1832 of Lamarck's theory. Although Lyell gave powerful support in the controversy following the publication of the Origin of Species, he did not make a clear statement of his own opinion and Darwin expressed great disappointment. DSB, VIII, 563-76. Published in the same year as the first edition! See also Archives of Natural History vol.13: Grayson's, the first 3 editions of Charles Lyell's The Geological evidences of the Antiquity of Man... "Lyell's book had diverse impacts, as is well known it contained his first major published statements on the Original of Species by variation by Darwin". It provided the first synthesis of what was now seen as the overwhelming evidence for the great antiquity of the human species on earth.

Solothurn, Jent and Gassmann and Neuchatel, Nicolet, 1840. 8vo and folio. 326p. Cont. h.calf and orig. printed wrs. laid down with small loss. Dfl. 9.500,= = Houblit, I: Great work of the "Founder of glacial geology"; Printing and Progress of Man, no.269. Made curious by the notion of other scientists that glaciers are moving, Agassiz decided to examine matter for himself. During successive journeys in the alpine regions during the years 1836 to 1837 he began to investigate thoroughly the structure and movements of the glaciers, their moraines, their influence in grooving and rounding the rocks over which they travelled. When he found such grooved rocks in areas where no glaciers had ever existed in the memory of man and combined with the fact that moraines and erratic boulders scattered in the plain of Switzerland must have been carried there by ice, Agassiz came to the conclusion that glaciers not only moved but must once have covered the whole of north-west Switzerland. He termed this geological period the ice age and despite strong opposition to this theory upon publication in this splendidly illustrated work (which he financed himself, hence the rarity of the work, having been published in a small edition only), further investigations in Scotland and Ireland only confirmed his conclusions. Some marginal staining to a few plates.

From the introduction: Although this volume stands by itself as one of the pioneer works in the geological exploration of Brazil, it is nevertheless a part of the scientific results of the "Thayer Expedition" directed by Louis Agassiz. Therefore, Hartt's contribution has been closely involved in the scientific controversy called the "Amazonian glaciation" which marred the last years if Agassiz's career.
