Museum (Nat.Hist.) II, 5590. Zittel p.242: "Five years later, the 'Etudes' of Henry Fayol on the coal-deposits of Commentry brought forward a strong chain of evidence in favour of sedimentation from water. Fayol shows how the pebbles, sand, mud and plant detritus borne in suspension by rivers subside according to their weight, and arrange themselves as independent layers of sediment. The coarser pebbles are deposited near the shore, usually with a distinct slope, while the light plant detritus is carried far out and deposited almost horizontally. In accordance with the amount of rainfall, the volume and velocity of the inflowing water vary, likewise the erosive action of rain and river water and the quality of the sediments. So that the alternation of conglomerate, sandstone, shale and coal, seams observed in most coal-basins finds, according to Fayol, a natural explanation upon the basis of increase and decrease of rainfall without assuming oscillations of groundlevel as has been done by the supporters of the coal-swamp theory of origin." The unbound atlas is restored at edges and the other bound atlas has several plates foxed in the margins. All text volumes have several stamps on titles. The Fayol also separately available at Dfl. 250,=.

Folio with 22p., 1 l. and 123 engraved plates, ofwhich 121 are beautifully handcoloured after Bessa and engraved by Contant and printed by l'Imprimerie Langlois. H.red morocco with gilt topedge. Dfl. 7.500,= = Nissen ZBI, 1348. Very rare in any state but also very difficult to collate as it is a "bibliographical nightmare". It is complete in 4 vols. with 248 plates and was published between 1820-1851. According to Dance it contains some of the most beautiful and accurate coloured plates on non-marine Mollusca ever published. Férussac's enormous collection of shells was stored in over 200 drawers. After his death a commission of the Natural History Museum of Paris strongly urged the French government to buy the collection and said that there was enough material in it to furnish 2 or 3 other collections. Two non-coloured plates have been cleaned and 2 vague and inoffensive erased library stamps.

Very rare collection on all that has been publ. by these authors on the Neanderthal skull. We offer the vols. and issues complete as printed. In 1856 quarrymen working in the Neanderthal between Düsseldorf and Elberfeld unearthed a number of bones in a limestone grotto. Part of a skull and some long bones eventually reached Johann Carl Fuhlrott, a schoolmaster at the college in Elberfeld. He immediately recognized the importance of the find, but was not able to save any more bones from what was, in all problability, a whole skeleton. He send a cast of the cranium to Schaaffhausen at Bonn University, who was at once convinced that they were human, and that the extra-ordinary skull was not a pathological specimen but had belonged to a normal individual of some ancient race of man which differed considerably from all modern races. This opinion Fuhlrott presented early in 1857 to the Natural History Society in Bonn, and later in the same year he compiled a fuller account of the find prepared in conjunction with Schaaffhausen: "Human Remains from a Grotto in Düsselthal".

This memoir, and his 1866 supplement, remained a standard work for several decades" Wesley C. Williams in DSB. Dfl. 17.500,= = Ward and Carozzi, 906; Hoover, 347. Rare first edition of the first illustrated work on fossils. The 8 books contain: Catalogus Rerum Fossilium... by Iohannes Kentmann; Calculorum qui in corpore ac membris hominum innascuntur, genera XII... by Kentmann; De metallicis rebus ac nominibus observationes variae et eruditae, ex schedis. by Fabricius; De succino libri duo by Severino Goebelius; De bitumine et cognatis ei, naphta (id est vulgi petroleo)...; De halosanthoseu spermate ceti... by Valerio Cordus and Gesner; Sancti patris epiphanii Episcopi Cypri ad diorum Tyri episcopum, de XII gemnis, quae erant in veste Aaronis, liber Graecus, et è regione latinus. By Iola Hierotarantinus and Gesner, De rerum fossilium, lapidum et gammarum maxime figuris et similitudinibus liber folum medicis, sed omnibus naturae ac philologiae studiosis, utilis et iucundus futurus by Gesner. Gesner (1516-1565) planned this book as a preliminary to a larger work on the Mineral Kingdom, comparable in scale to his systematic zoological and botanical surveys, but he died of the plague in the year of its publication. Unlike the earlier lapidaries, his work contains a morphological classification of minerals and is free of the mediaeval focus on the miraculous properties and "virtues" of stones. "The term "fossil" here again refers to anything dug from the ground, and is not confined to paleontological remains. It is, furthermore, one of the earliest attempts to arrange the many objects described into some sort of logical order..." (Sinkansas, 2366). Gesner devided the mineral kingdom in 15 classes. For a complete analysis of this classification scheme and the work of Gesner as a whole see Adams, Birth and Development of the Geological Sciences (p.176-183). However this copy is waterstained throughout, and the titlepage, 3 pages (amongst which the portrait) and a half page are in a good photostat on old paper.
