1001. Owen, R. Description of the skeleton of an extinct gigantic sloth, Mylodon Robustus, Owen, with observations on osteology, natural affinities and probable habits of the megatherioid quadrupeds in general. London, J.v.Voorst, 1842. 4to with 24 lithographs ofwhich one folded (torn and repaired). Orig. cloth binding. Dfl. 1.250,= = Scarce monograph by this famous paleontologist. The work is based on the fossils of a ground Sloth, found in Argentinia during Darwin's Voyages! This specimen was purchased at Owen's request by the Royal College of Surgeons in London. The culmina- tion of Owen's work was the installation of Megatherium in the Crystal Palace. "This great anatomist opened his magnificent series of research on fossil reptiles in the year 1839; his works on this subject extend over a period of fifty years and have been a source of remarkable scientific progress. Owen erected a number of orders of fossil reptiles, and gave to them an equal value with the orders of living reptiles" (Zittel, p.415).

1002. Owen, R. Palaeontology or a systematic summary of extinct animals and their geological relations. 2nd edition. Edinburgh, Adam and Ch. Black, 1861. Small 8vo. XVI, 463p., 173 figs. "The Traité" is unquestionably the most important contribution yet made to the science [...] and contains a great amount of new matter. Its chief merit is in its conception and plan as a complete manual of systematic paleobotany. The classification is highly scientific and rational and the discussion of abstruse points in defence of it is acute and cogent". Ward, 1885 p.338. Text a bit foxed but the plates are mostly fine.

Influenced by Lamarck and Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Serres stated in his Géognosie (1829) the "extinct species (Générations) appear to be linked by an uninterrupted chain to present species". An english summary of this book, published the following year, emphasized the increasing complexity of organisms during the course of geological time. Serres subsequently adopted a new approach to the problem, however, as did Brongniart, Deshayes and E.R.A. Serres, they rejected the idea of the variability of species. At the same time they relaxed the notion of fixity of species by accepting the evidence for successive variations - an idea that seemed to be confirmed by stratigraphic geology.
