1511. Theophraste. Traité des Pierres de Theophraste. Traduit du Grec avec des notes physiques et critiques, traduites de l'Anglois de M. Hill; auquel on a ajouté deux lettres du même auteur... sur les couleurs du Saphir et de la Turquoise.. sur les effets des différens menstrues sur le cuivre. Paris, Jean-Thomas Hérissant, 1754. 12mo. XXIV, 287p. and woodengraved textvignette. Cont. full calf with marbled flyleaves. Dfl. 2.500,= = Rare first french translation. Ward and Carozzi, 2167. Theophrastus (ca. 371 to 287 B.C.) was associated with Aristotle for more thans 2 decades and succeeded him as head of what came to be known as the Peripatetic School. He studies under Plato before joining Aristotle. Among the extant writings Theophrastus monograph on petrology, de Lapidibus, best illustrates his investigation into inanimate compounds of the elements. The body of the work is systematic discussion on stones and mineral earth found around the Mediterranean and in the farther regions traversed by Alexander's army. Substances are distinguished by visual and tactile qualities and their behaviour, particularly in reaction to fire. Included are the earliest known greek references to the use of mineral fuel, the pearl, the touchstone in testing alloys, the manufacture of white lead. Of particular interest for the history of technology are the accounts of the preparation of pigments and the uses of earth dug from pits. From DSB vol.13 p.330/31. The lower part of p.23/24 cut away without loss of text but also added are a handwritten note in an old hand on the 'observation sur ce qui est dit ici de la formation des cailloux' and some more notes and underlinings in the margin all in brown ink in the same old hand with interesting commentary on the origin of the earth and a small text on the verso of the titlepage starting: ce livre mérite d'être lu et étudie.. Small repaired cuts on the titlepage without touching any text. The first english edition appeared in London by Davis printers in 1746.

The highly enlarged second edition and now rare. In this book he arranged the minerals in the Wallerius system and Linnean classification. Especially important because of the large index and minero-geographical dictionnary at the end.

Dealing mainly with the genesis of the diamond, the above work includes a short account of the practice of diamond mining including recovery, as adopted by De Beers Consolidated Mines. With a chapter on the diamond bearing gravels of South Africa. 2 erased library stamps on tp.'s, otherwise a good copy. An important monograph.

Wien 1810. 35p. reprint. Dfl. 980,= = Interesting reprint of Wulfen's two major works with new biographical notes. A fine reproduction of these two very rare books with fine handcoloured plates in a limited edition.
